Every pint at Barleyford passes through nine pairs of hands, and most of those hands live within ten miles of the barn. This is who is behind the bar, the boil kettle, and the burger pass.
June Calloway founded the brewery with her brother Sam after a decade brewing in Portland and Munich. June still tastes every fermenter before it moves to the cellar. Sam runs the numbers, the forklift, and — on Fridays — the fiddle session.
The rest of the paddle
Assistant brewers Priya and Tom split the brew deck six days a week. Cellar hand Ellis, all of twenty-two, can already tell a diacetyl problem by smell alone. In the kitchen, Dot, Marcus, and Ana write a menu that changes with the taps. And Mara behind the bar remembers your usual — and your dog's name.
"Hire neighbors, teach them everything, and never let anyone pour a beer they can't explain. That's the whole training manual."
— June Calloway, Head Brewer
Each spring we take on two paid brewing apprentices — no experience needed, curiosity required. Four of our nine started exactly that way. Applications open every March at the bar and through our contact form.
